People have argued over this for centuries but pretty sure I can crack this today on twitter via sarcasm.

I'm actually very sympathetic to the idea that not being able to get laid, or generally have an adult relationship, is extremely bad and a quite intense source of human suffering. But that is not exactly what the woman-hating, terrorist-radicalising incel thing is about, is it?

If it was genuinely about the redistribution of sex, surely he'd at least address the point that there's a close substitute available with the means of production no further away than the end of one's wrist?

Analogous to all groups with grievances. Usually have many bad groups representing them. To acknowledge the grievance is not to support the group

to focus on the grievance of the incel community is to ignore the actual much larger group of people who find ex and adult relationships hard. The LRB piece Douthat links to is good. The "redistribute sex" pieces in the massacre aftermath have not been.

Yep, you're right. In fact, if anyone representing your group commits terrorism your grievance should go to the back of the queue. This is a much more generalisable rule. Loads of obvious analogous cases

Quite apart from weirdness of thinking this is the most important issue incel murders provoke, I'm v v skeptical that there is anywhere in this society a serious sex shortage, even for weirdos (speaking as a weirdo whose teenage sex deprivation seemed insurmountable but was not)

Like, spoiler, it's not sex that is in short supply for these folks, it's unearned male power, dominion and pride (which means sex under very specific terms women are now freeer to decline)

I think there is a shortage for disabled, elderly, learning handicapped etc, and also for some young weirdos who have yet to find their sex niche. But yes. None of those are really incel issues.

yeah, that is true! To modify, then, maybe sex shortages are rare, and right now some pundits seem to be talking about people for whom they are most often mild and temporary over the people for whom they are most often serious and permanent

Or long term, rather than "permanent", which is inappropriately fatalistic

I also suspect that the incel movement is also as much a cause of celibacy as an effect...
