Not allowed or can't? It would take a non-trivial amount of IPO to eliminate this... but I'm curious to know whether the standard forbids it truly.

Which is "good" as plenty of codebases _rely_ on this behavior, e.g. run-time reflection systems that auto-register type info on startup.

Very good point. Just something to keep your eye open for while refactoring. I'm eliminating many stale static objects in the project I'm currently working on.

But the static linker will ignore them completely, so we cannot use these constructors for their side effects either. We end up with the worst of both world...

I dream of fixing that somehow. However modify linkers seem really hard from a standardization perspective :(
