Pat Brown, later governor of CA, ran for DA of SF in 1943. During his campaign he wrote: "The District Attorney's office has more to do with the unhappiness of people than any other office. . . .[i]t should be handled by a person who is really interested in the welfare of others"

That city is long gone. And we’re here some seventy years later where 880,000 people prop up a city and county that even before the pandemic, willfully refused to address metastasizing problems and our eye-watering budget seems to make not a whit of difference.
