Because police don't bother to arrest anymore. Ask the citizens if they feel that crime has dropped.

Sure. Let’s use feelings to guide public policy.

Isn’t that how SF works? “Compassion” and San Francisco values over logic and common sense? Homeless industrial complex anyone?

what is the common sense solution to stop the spread of covid? to crowd people into areas they can’t maintain proper hygiene in? https://www.aclu.org/news/smart-justice/new-model-shows-reducing-jail-population-will-lower-covid-19-death-toll-for-all-of-us/ …

Like a tent encampment? I think at a minimum, a jail or other facility has medical care, food and water, and while not pleasant, is honestly likely far safer and more hygienic than they’re likely to find on the streets, COVID19 or not.

I know Chesa wants to empty the jails on principle, but using a pandemic as cover is deceitful and foolhardy.

i disagree. i think that we will see the cities/states that refuse to release prisoners have much higher death tolls, specifically of incarcerated people but also in general.

Point taken, but note how those are specifically prison factories, a dystopian term if there ever was one. They’re not just staying in their cells 23-24 hours without other direct social contact. 1/2

I would hazard a guess, that there is no such 20% percent overcrowding, let alone SF jail labor. The mayor has not housed lrg numbers in hotels, isn’t likely to, and that’s why I would say that an SF jail is likely far safer than the Streets of San Francisco
currently anyway.
