“..fire emissions from the southeast last year were at least as high as the entire annual Australian CO2 emissions inventory from the combustion of fossil fuels, so effectively doubling the nation’s carbon footprint. “ If you spend the whole budget by Jan, you have to change

International education is our fourth-largest export. Just under a third of onshore international students are Chinese. 121k people work in the Higher Ed sector in Australia; 3x the number mining thermal coal. The difference in how we talk about these industries is...interesting.

Studies indicate the world is on a pathway to ~3°C warming in 2100. Transition risk is when policy, technology, society moves faster. Physical risk is inescapable, ~1.5°C is given independent of choices, but future warming depends on choices.

I know it’s transparent that the ‘forest management’ argument is just preparing the ground for logging - I didn’t realise it wasn’t even a bad idea. He lifted it from these geniuses

In addition to being reflexive nosetweaking, I’ll point out that this is a reason to avoid usage-based pricing for developer-oriented tools and, instead, orient pricing around proxies for sophistication.

Are we starting to see the economy backlash - what was the hottest trend is losing its gloss as companies start promoting ‘once only lifetime subscription’ and other fixed cost options

A pair of graphs everyone should have in mind when dealing with deniers. The greenhouse effect isn't just theory. We have unambiguously detected its fingerprints ... Thanks to & for inspiration on this one.

CO2 in 2019 was 411.4 ppm. I'll go ahead and make a prediction that we'll cross the 2°C global warming threshold when CO2 hits 512 ppm.

The privacy paranoid among us have long worried that all of our online photos would be scraped to create a universal face recognition app. My friends, it happened and it’s here:

Climate change modeling has been pretty darn accurate for decades. Anyone claiming otherwise is trying to drown out the warning sirens so we’ll argue and doubt instead of taking action.

A plot of global temperature change over time from 1970 to 2020. There’s a black line showing the ensemble mean of the climate models and a red line showing observations, plus a blue shaded region showing the range. The red line varies more but follows the black pretty well, both in the “hindcast” pre-2000 section and in the “forecast” post-2000 section. These are for models run in 2004. Point is they work well.
