Sure, it's easy to shoot the rhetorical fish in this barrel by pointing out that grown men shouldn't sexualize kids' cartoons. But I think it goes further than that. This isn't about what She-Ra looks like. It's about what She-Ra teaches children about how girls should look.

A show that is for girls should be teaching girls that they are worthy of respect no matter how they look. That they can be heroes no matter how they look. And grown men are basically saying "how dare you tell girls not to prioritize our opinions on how they should look!?"
এই থ্রেডটি দেখান -
It's easy for me to roll my eyes and say "She-Ra's not for you." But claiming girls' heroes should be sexually attractive to adult men is saying that girls should be taught to prioritize being attractive to adult men. And that's way, way worse than being weird about a cartoon.

I don't care if you were eleven in 1985 and She-Ra was your first crush. Kids of all genders deserve to get what white boys of the eighties took for granted: to have heroes who embody *their* fantasies, instead of telling them to embody someone else's fantasies.
এই থ্রেডটি দেখান -
If a bunch of adult women insisted that He-Man had to be sexually attractive to them because he was their first crush, Misogynerds would riot. They would fall over themselves to insist that He-Man was THEIRS because they wanted to BE HIM. And guess what? Girls deserve the same.

So yeah the obvious reply to "this thing for children is not sexy" is "my dude, it is not supposed to be sexy." But the argument under the argument is about giving girls heroes who are NOT designed to be sexy to grown men, and why that's important--and also why it's threatening.

kid me could never wear a she-ra costume. my girls won’t have that problem. Any adult wasting a moment of their lives on getting angsty over the sex-appeal of a re-booted 80’s kids cartoon character they haven’t even seen in action really needs to question their priorities.
-
This reminded me that My grandma sewed little clothes for my She-Ra Action figures because she was naked. The first hing I said was ooo I like that she has shorts
-
She DOES ride a horse. Shorts seem eminently practical for an equestrian.
-
I’m going to assume you’re being sarcastic... ‘Shorts seem eminently practical for an equestrian.’ Ever heard of rash?
-
Exactly. I mean.. I’d -rather- have proper riding pants but if my choice is a tennis skirt/lingerie cross-over or a pair of bike shorts, sign me up for the shorts!

There is nothing the Male Gaze does not feel entitled to. When something is created without male consumption in mind, all hell breaks loose. That act is a huge threat to its power.
-
As an aside, that’s why public breastfeeding is so enraging to the general public. “Sure do that in private, but in public, your existence is justified only if it can be consumed by me.”

-
TL:DR off topic anyways Nobody cares but the loonies.

As a dad, I'm desperate for media options that offer my kids role models that aren't over sexualized or super violent. Lots of kid shows are toxic.
-
I've found that the DC Superhero Girls cartoons do a good job in redesigning costumes so they're not sexualized. Wonder Woman has pants. The writing is funny for adult nerds like my wife and I to enjoy but it's toned down for our almost-3yo to get into the world.
-
We watch a lot of Steven Universe, Star vs The Forces of Evil, etc. But also live action things like Odd Squad, Sesame Street, and good old Mr. Rogers. My kids are under 7 years old. They have DC toys. Maybe we can add that.

The powerful fully clothed women are what I love about the new Marvel movies. The warriors in Wakanda are POWERFUL! The women in Ragnarok are amazing and fully dressed. Still beautiful, smart, sexy... but so kickass!!

It's not juat a case of a cartoon character being sexualized for men, the male characters have been sexualized too and who do you think that was for? I think what needs to happen is a redefinition of what sexy is, my husband is no thor, however hes very intelligent and funny.
-
Also men. Superheroes embody the ideal of men for other men and themselves.
-
I wish someone would tell my husband that

-
Of these guys only the Rock is remotely as jacked as a comics-style superhero. And also, who picks them? I don't follow People mag so I don't know.
-
No idea hun

stop thinking 'male power fantasy' is an equivalent of 'sexualizing'. Please, stop using one term when you clearly mean the other. Or try to not be a whiny man - a default man - and learn about the things you talk about before talking about them.
