All scenario planning hits VUCA: volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous. Centralized top-down decision-making collapses in "complex contingencies." I had to find something different: reduce complexity, increase cohesion in reusable patterns across all disasters @DanielleFong

The result is called Simple Critical Infrastructure Maps. We start with a simple map of objective human needs. It then works up to model grid, governance and supply chain issues. The idea is that every actor can find themselves and their partners on the map FAST!

The rest of the Simple Critical Infrastructure Maps system is here http://resiliencemaps.org/files/Dealing_in_Security.July2010.en.pdf … remember, this model is not specific to coronavirus. This is a general model of human cooperation in crisis. We teach it to people so they can work together more effectively.

So now let's look at the pandemic case in more detail. Let me introduce
@lucasgonzalez a flu epidemiologist. Lucas and I created#FLUSCIM http://resiliencemaps.org/files/fluscim/FluSCIM-6p-English.pdf … (summary) http://resiliencemaps.org/files/fluscim/FluSCIM-69p-English.pdf … (full guide) this is architecture for whole-society pandemic response@DanielleFongShow this thread -
This same model scales up, and scales down: individuals, groups, organizations and nation states all get their own top-level SCIM models. People draw the map together, put all their data on the map, and have standard ways of referencing their interdependencies.

The whole thing fits together into a single integrated map of responders: individuals, groups, organizations, and State actors, united by a clear objective map of reality http://resiliencemaps.org/files/Dealing_in_Security.July2010.en.pdf … as the situation evolves, the map changes: a consistent dashboard

Now let's talk about supply chains: as we have seen with homemade masks, we have to turn what we have into what we need, because supply chains overload. Enter http://appropedia.org/hexayurt flat pack, designed to be mass produced with nothing by thousands of teams at once
@DanielleFongpic.twitter.com/SuofHlMJgk

The hexayurt comes in many sizes, all mass produced from standard 1.2mx2.4m (4'x8') boards. About 10,000 per year are produced for
@burningman and other festivals. The ShiftPod variant is deployed for refugees. Many materials are possible@DanielleFong https://www.appropedia.org/Hexayurt_Plywood …pic.twitter.com/1qPkyiBFsHShow this thread -
There's a fair bit of academic research on the hexayurt http://hexayurt.com/ not as much as we would like, but structural engineering etc. Examination of costs for very large scale deployments at http://hexayurt.com/hexayurt_country … These are all free, no patent/copyright!

Another new zone of concern https://twitter.com/leashless/status/1241515831231733765 … can we get Garmin and Iridium to relax some of the limits on the Garmin Inreach satellite pagers, to make it easier to use them as backup comms for hospitals in the event of localized grid failures? New firmware
