Very, very little of our existing cultural milieu is for for purpose in the 21sr century. We slightly got organized around the moon shot and the anti nuclear movement. Past that it was a dead loss: a constant struggle to keep destructive mental fossils alive. Even the sixties.
The sixties is a huge cultural lie. It purported to be The Future, but (other than space travel) it was just a massive attempt to modernize religion. Ideas from Buddhism fused to the Perennial Philosophy with drugs as the solvent. Might as well have been a modern Cathar Heresy.
What we completely failed to do last century was get real about global limits and global risks. We never built a politics that was fit to handle the nuclear threat. We never did have those public debates about technology. Wisdom did not translate into power. We just drifted on.
I stare out at the modern progressive movement aghast at the stupidity and venality. You're fighting fucking Nazis by deploying pink hats and good feelings. No side takes global poverty or global politics seriously. Climate policy is a (sick) joke. It's all without foundation.
But somebody will crack this. There will be a moment of insight, cutting as deeply into the postindustrial age as Marx did for industrialization. Somebody will ask the right question, the thing that reveals the actual machinery of power and the hand that abuses that power today.
And my bet is that it will be a lot closer to Richard Stallman than Any Rand. Stallman has built *enormous* global change without accumulating wealth or conventional political power. He really is a model for effective global changemaking So he knows something. But we need more
We need more because we never did wind up with a mass scale campaign for nuclear disarmament. That was our first exposure to existential threat, and we completely screwed up the response. We just got used to planetary death by immolation as an option. Nobody even panics anymore.
When you talk about "culture", which culture are you talking about? There is a "locality" of culture that means all different places reflect things differently.
Currently extinction Rebellion is gearing up to be the movement that pushes power elites to either make the necessary changes or be discarded by the PPL ( people) if you are wondering
Another thing is that I am thinking about calling a project, or one of it's stages Armageddon, as it is the end of the world as we know it (or maybe it's perception), at least among the people that can effect sustainable change. :-D
