The difference between townships & informal settlements is that townships generally have brick homes & city services. Informal settlements are make shift shacks set up on empty land where people clear the bush & have no city water or electricity.

Residents said when a recent fire ignited the fire truck didn’t know where to come so took too long to arrive, there’s only a trickle of water from their communal makeshift taps & a couple & their baby perished. Rubbish dump fires like this can easily get out of control.
