I've been exposed to the good, the bad, and the ugly when it comes to communication as a business -- later we're going to talk about the incentives and the business and how this contributes to disinformation and the legit communication which contributes to good stuff.

Renee: eng + poli sci with a minor in Russian [ boy howdy I bet that comes in handy these days ], quant trader, came out to CA started doing VC. What brought me into disinformation was having my first kid and seeing anti-vax stuff show up in my feed.

So I started mapping social networks and looking at how small groups could amplify a point of view, became an activist about it. Wound up working on counter-ISIS efforts, how do we think about societal responses. Talk about different adversaries.

Outline: 1. address the misinformation about misinformation 2. campaigns and use cases 3. exploring solutions 4. Q&A
Prikaži ovu nit -
Myth #1: dis/misinformation, it's all the same. Misinformation -- things which are inadvertently wrong Disinformation -- things which are wrong on purpose (intent to mislead and deceive)
Prikaži ovu nit -
Propoganda -- white propaganda is attributed to the state (e.g. RT), then slow slide into obscured propaganda (funder obscured, purpose obscured) Fake news -- news which is demonstrably false. Motivation was largely economic to drive ad impressions e.g. "pope endorses Trump"
Prikaži ovu nit -
Filter bubbles -- echo chambers, "bespoke realities" you choose to participate in siloed media environments, not just choosing what you see but also a route to send in black propaganda
Prikaži ovu nit -
Are people responding with growing awareness? There's an awareness that the information you see online doesn't necessarily have the integrity of libraries -- but it doesn't mean that it helps detection in the moment. Wikipedia is the default fack check
Prikaži ovu nit -
Even some of the fact check sites have disinformation, which makes this really hard!
Prikaži ovu nit -
Myth #2: it's just about politics, right? Everyone likes to hear that the problem space is bigger than we thought. The objections, the motivations, this is all a new flavour. Thinking about the motivations of your adversaries is key to understanding attacks and vulns
Prikaži ovu nit -
Motivation: $$, ideological, political (but often beyond elections), can be hard to distinguish between propaganda and policy awareness effort. Identify what the message is, who the messenger is, what is expected of you.
Prikaži ovu nit -
We need to build resilient individuals like we build resilient systems (
@iMeluny )Prikaži ovu nit -
Myth #3: Disinformation in limited to Russia No. It's not. State actors -- best resourced/most sophisticated, especially Russia. They're committed to a long game. Iran a bit. Saudi Arabia/China do it at opportune political times.
Prikaži ovu nit -
Terrorists -- propaganda/recruitment tool, trying to pull people into private messaging apps. Look official, like a state actor.
Prikaži ovu nit -
Domestic ideologues -- it's got a pepe up there but there are more Twitter icons it could easily be. What's the line between coordinated activity vs real activism. True believers -- conspiratorial groups which truly believe Spammers -- at the front lines of trying things out
Prikaži ovu nit -
Myth #4: Disinformation isn't relevant for infosec/cyber [
]Prikaži ovu nit -
Disinformation is directly relevant for this community. If you think this is just about data protection, things are going to change very quickly for you. Fraud, platform abuse, integrity are starting to fall within the mandate of security teams -- anti-abuse works with security
Prikaži ovu nit -
There's also intersection between "cyber-enabled" disinformation and trying to hack accounts (e.g. hack influential accounts to spread stuff). We need to think about how we're contributing. We as a community have a hard time figuring out what's true -- we retweet wrong stuff!
Prikaži ovu nit -
[ Sorry, missed typing a part about prominent people with loud voices online because I literally started laughing. ] If you see something wrong, don't share it with a mean comment about it! You make it harder to change an article when it's more popular.
Prikaži ovu nit -
There was a news outlet promoting an invasive Chrome extension which had full access to your account to "improve privacy". when
@iMeluny told them this was invasive, they said "this is the most popular video on our site; we're not changing it."Prikaži ovu nit -
Myth #5: Disinformation focuses on foreign nation-state interference Worried that we're looking at 2020 and expecting 2016 to happen again. Things have evolved. More tactics. More actors.
Prikaži ovu nit -

Growing marketplace for disinformation-for-hire, just like hackers-for-hire. Psy group, Spamoflage Dragon Campaign, Philippines "White Trolls"

There's no wonder that to the average person the internet looks like

Some of that has to do with the metrics that the industry is using. We have gone too far as an industry.Prikaži ovu nit -
Think about what this has in common with security. Security doesn't have great metrics either. [ SO TRUE ]
Prikaži ovu nit -
Common (bad) metrics: * mentions (what does this even really mean) * impressions (also meaningless) * share of voice (pick a topic, how much *you* are visible that conversation) * engagement * click throughs (remember who the customers are of the platform -- they need numbers)
Prikaži ovu nit -
* advertising value equivalent (AVE) -- PR people trying to one-up the advertising colleagues saying "we got this much visibility for less $$" None of this has to do with outcomes. The field is trying to move from being from an art into a (dark) science.

It should cause you pause if you're reporting something to your business that is not how you value your profession.
