It is one of those now-contaminated terms, rendered meaningless by the current political context. Best to pat it on the head and bid it farewell.

Dan Rodgers has a great essay/chapter on this - the changing meaning of political terms and words, and how phrases have meaning based on moments in history and agenda setting, e.g. “free-thinker,” or “freedom” or “liberty,” etc etc

IMO, you can't be a "free thinker" if you are a member of a political party. By definition, you are part of a part where you have general thought agreements.

What of Ed Koch's comment about voting for him while not agreeing w all his agenda? What of using this method: since it's impossible that I'm right about ALL of my good number of political ideas, I am willing to affiliate generously with a group who also Certainly is same as me

Free thinker: one who is willing to be wrong. As for myself when I'm willing to be wrong, as soon as I find out I'm wrong, I no longer have to be wrong. However, I need the most accurate evidence also.
