Most people never, ever forget the first person to give them a sizable advance on their own self-confidence — there's no greater security in life than being a serial enabler of wonderful young people

“A city should be governed at the scale of its most painful problem and highest priority. What makes this simple question create so much complexity is the enormous variation of what constitutes the most painful problem over the landscape, especially large metropolitan landscapes.

Sometimes when I'm really lacking in courage because of anxiety or whatever, I will put on this video. It's the last three minutes of Kobe's last game, the greatest retirement game by any athlete ever. Everyone should watch it.

AI will maybe level this playing field soon, but in the interim, product review sites/videos don't fill the knowledge vacuum left by death of the middleman. I want industry information aggregators that ask less of my own agency

So maybe the status quo ante = needless mattress optimization (competition among producers for distributor attention) But status quo = more info with less transparency, less quality accountability. Incentive to differentiate in personality but not quality.

EVEN THOUGH their incentives are so much different: sell me the best product vs. sell me their product. If I had that kind of blind trust in Beauty Rest, I wouldn't have known that Sealy makes a better firm mattress.. That's not to say I would have noticed the difference anyway.

There's a whole content universe designed to make direct-to-consumer shopping feel empowering, but more often than not I give into brand. I'll blindly trust to sell me fashionable glasses just like I trusted my salesperson to know which mattress to sell me...

I don't want to be the expert on steamers, I don't want to be the expert on mattresses. I don't want to consume and sort through all that information. It's tiring and probably inefficient

I listened to this info but didn't feel the need to really digest it. Last month I read 10 articles before I bought a new $20 steamer on Amazon. In comparison this was a breeze. I trusted my salesperson. I was happily lazy

When I got there, I spent 15 minutes trying out mattresses. They all felt the same. Eventually I asked a salesperson for help: she narrowed the selection based on my sleeping posture, she explained mattress specs (coil count, firmness) and brand reputations...

This week I went mattress shopping at . As a young person who has made almost all of my big purchases online, this in-person, buy-it-from-the-middleman experience was…….very surprisingly relaxing

The hard part is that it can be so scary to jump off the cliff of investing in your interests. How do we make the cliff feel smaller?

We don’t talk enough about this synergy nearly enough (to students, to employees, etc)…or optimize for it as much as we should (with our hiring practices, employee trainings, career counseling, etc)

Doing what you’re interested in at work is almost always where you will (a) add the most value and (b) be the most happy. This is a very exciting idea from 1817 (Ricardian trade theory: produce what you are best at producing) finally applied to people instead of global economies

But here's where it gets interesting. My brain was STARVING for this kind of handicraft. Even though I was bad at it, even though I didn't understand it, even though I was doing it wrong most of the time, I was COMPELLED to keep crocheting granny squares. It was addictive!

Sneakers !!!! are a case study in this. It’s a whole bunch of people deciding (re: a new trend) that, yes, it’s a little ugly, but we can make our own coolness about it
