And just to be clear, I do think that psychology lab studies are studying real things (most of the time) but effect sizes also mean something *in reality*

If effect sizes in psychology lab studies are not a reflection of reality, then we are studying things that are not real or we are studying real things in the wrong way.

If walking barefoot feels good to you, do it. Roll around in the cold wintery grass if that’s your jam. Placebo the heck out of that feeling. At the same time there is a clear need to educate people–probably in primary school--to be better BS detectors. 3/3

People are fascinating. It’s not enough to say “I’m doing this because it feels good and I like it”. No, it has to have healing powers through unmeasurable electric forces. Pseudoscience is magical thinking with science words. 2/x

I just learned about a new health trend called “earthing” that claims you can heal yourself simply by touching your bare feet to the earth. Why do proponents claim this is good for you? Because it “transfers free electrons from the earth” and “neutralizes free radicals”, etc. 1/x

Here’s something: “We estimated that 22% of breast cancers, 58% of renal cancers, 73% of thyroid cancers, and 54% of melanomas were overdiagnosed, or 18% of all cancer diagnoses in women in 2012”

Important work. Men deserve at minimum Shared Decision Making for prostate screening. No PSA test should be done without it!

Yesterday I attended an 8-hr workshop on using the Open Science Framework to enhance open research practices and improve lab management. It was tough to take a whole day away from my work, but def worth it! Thanks for such a great tool!

Hey psych twitter, I'm looking for a scale that assesses why people reject new information, particularly expressing the feeling that "This can't be true, given other things I know". Is there a validated scale that measures something like this?

I keep trying to hate reviewers but dang it, their feedback keeps making my work better. That is to say: Thanks to all of you out there who have offered constructive criticism of my ideas and work. I can see it getting better and it's exciting.

The editorial by et al makes a strong case for fundamental change, above and beyond clinician heroics (or basics depending on POV), for a revolution that turns us away from industrial healthcare and toward careful and kind care.

As for some of the replies to this tweet... Promoting discredited theories, dismissing feedback, and losing your status as a scientist as a result is not the same as pointing out demonstrable errors in the scientific literature, full stop.

This is such a wonderful essay. I hope we all take time to imagine how this would feel, because so many junior scholars don't have to imagine. These experiences take idealistic young people and gives them a big injection of cynicism and bitterness. It is unkind to say the least.
