  1. New M2 student Lucie Hervieu has been busy prepping the rocks from La Soufrière de Guadeloupe 🌋 for electrical measurements! We hope to use these data to better understand large scale field surveys!

After months of non-destructive measurements, some of the samples from La Soufrière de Guadeloupe 🌋 are meeting their fate in the uniaxial press 💪 how does their alteration influence volcano stability? 🤔

David Jessop’s representative dome “rocks” for La Soufrière de Guadeloupe 🌋 really tell you about the nature of the materials forming the dome. Here’s the contents of one bag 🤔

Some more examples! this year the students will also have a go at grading the posters, to help them discover what they like and don’t like about their classmate’s efforts!

The so-called poster exam is in full swing again at : prepare a poster on a white board in 4 hours on an unseen short paper! We’ll have a PICO session later this week. Here’s one example, on a paper by and ...

Up second is a field ultrasonic kit, with which we can measure the velocities of big blocks in the lab and field 👩🏻‍🔬👨🏻‍🔬 it will be interesting to compare such data with lab-data - useful for teaching and research 2/2

A couple of new toys arrived in the lab recently 👩🏻‍🔬👨🏻‍🔬 first up, a set of devices to measure the strength, compressive and shear, of unlithified deposits! We plan to use these on La Soufrière de Guadeloupe 🌋 to measure an important (in terms of stability) clay layer 1/2

Quite a surreal feeling to head back out for an observation flight to Whakaari White Island in the aftermath of the December 9th . Still incredibly hot gas and steam coming out, and the lake is reformed, but the old dome structure is gone.
