Today we released our report studying 10 counties & 3 states finding fees & fines are an inefficient source of gov revenue. In one county we studied, they spent at least $1.17 to collect every dollar of revenue raised through fees and fines

It's been 10 months since white supremacists set fire to a storied civil rights institution. But the FBI's investigation appears to have turned focus toward the victims. Our expert tells why this is so distressing.

Travis County is re-examining its court fees and fines system after a recent Brennan Center report revealed that uncollected court debts, which largely impact low-income communities and people of color, ballooned to $18 million between 2012 & 2017.

To address systemic issues in the criminal justice system, reform and civil rights voices must be included. Moving forward it’s essential that the Commission give a range of experts the opportunity to attend public meetings or provide input as the Commission shapes its report.

As an ex, some prosecutors are now focusing on using diversion & treatment to ensure that people w/mental health & substance abuse problems are treated for their addictions or illnesses instead of spending time locked up behind bars

Also cause for concern: the panel is tasked with looking at refusals by prosecutors to enforce laws or prosecute categories of crimes. Barr has been critical of such discretion, but it’s an approach used by reform-minded prosecutors across the country

Lack of representation from the criminal justice reform & civil rights community, public health field, & social service providers means those important viewpoints will not be at the table as the Commission discusses recommendations that affect their work.

A new DOJ commission aims to tackle some of the biggest problems in policing, many of which – as the Attorney General said – require solutions beyond the scope of police expertise. So it’s concerning that the panel only includes law enforcement voices.

Great piece from detailing reasons why we should be hopeful about both the effort to reform bail in NY and efforts around the country, despite significant pushback against these smarter policies.

New (partial) crime data out today! The FBI’s preliminary 2019 report shows that murder and violent crime fell by 3.9 and 3.1 percent, respectively, in the first half of 2019. That's good news, but it comes with one caveat.: 1/2

On the red carpet at JCC's Social Justice Film Fest: All Rise! + moderating the Q&A afterwards. "Monster" is what the prosecutor calls a 17yo honors student and aspiring filmmaker who's charged with felony murder. But is he?

Perhaps most importantly, we need to think about how to shrink the criminal justice system. Local, state, and the federal government should work to find ways to reduce the number of people entering the system.
