  10. Scammers often are located overseas. Accents, broken English or oddly-worded sentences are red flags, especially when they come from a phone number you don't recognize. The same goes for threats of arrests or something ominous to scare you into urgent action. All signs of a scam.

  11. Remember - if you don't recognize the number and it's not from a contact - letting the call go to voicemail is a good option. Many times scammers won't leave voicemails. When they do, they're usually very easy to spot.

  12. This one includes a 208 number and a caller with an accent. As with many scam calls, the goal is to frighten the recipient and get them to quickly share money or personal information.

  13. We've also seen more reports of the Federal Reserve scam. This one is newer but is a variation on the same theme. The caller - lying - says they are with the Federal Reserve. You're about to be arrested and need to hand over personal information to prevent the arrest.

  14. Staff in my office's Consumer Protection Division are reporting an uptick in Social Security scam calls this week. Here's a refresher on what that scam sounds like. Remember, when in doubt, hang up the phone ASAP.
