Today is the big travel ban showdown at the Supreme Court as we hear the justices for the first time debate Trump's controversial immigration policies in public: Trump's travel ban faces Supreme Court reckoning https://reut.rs/2Hs5Jt4  #scotus #travelban

At issue are parts of Trump's third travel ban affecting people from Iran, Libya, Somalia, Syria and Yemen. Chad was on the list announced back in September, but Trump removed it on April 10. Some from North Korea and Venezuela also barred but that isn't before the court

The Supreme Court in December allowed the ban to go into full effect with only two justices dissenting, which suggests the challengers have an uphill battle

It's the last oral argument of the Supreme Court term and, unusually, the court is releasing same-day audio due to the heightened public interest

Muslim Ban? As a candidate, Trump promised “a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States.” The administration says court should pay no heed to campaign promises and subsequent retweets of anti-Muslim videos do not equal endorsements

Trump administration says ban needed for national security reasons. Many foreign policy experts and military types signed onto briefs questioning that justification, saying it is flimsy at best

Ultimately the case is likely to come down to whether a court majority is willing to defer to the president’s broad authority over immigration, perhaps wary of a ruling that would hamstring future, less-Trumpy presidents

Oral arguments start at 10 but this being the Supreme Court there's no live TV/audio coverage. Reporters have to go into court ahead of time and once they leave they can't come back. Stay tuned to @Reuters for updates

It is too difficult to vet immigrants from Muslim countries. Until the State Department can do so effectively, it is unfortunate the few will suffer due to the many. Control of immigration is within the President’s Constitutional Authority. Supreme Court must follow Constitution
