So yesterday there was lots of talk about non-D.C. residents attending D.C. public schools, in the wake of this story from Duke Ellington:http://wamu.fm/2BWTcOn

What's allegedly happening at Duke Ellington certainly backs up what's long been a standing rumor among some parents: non-D.C. kids are getting into D.C. schools, and not paying tuition as they should.

It's of course very difficult for a layperson to determine whether a child at a school lives in D.C. or not. For example, that they get dropped off by someone with a Maryland license plate is certainly not conclusive evidence of anything.

D.C. says it checks for non-resident students every year as part of its annual enrollment audit. Over the last three school years, seen below, the number of red flags for non-resident students has been relatively low.pic.twitter.com/AU3zhv0YPj

Of course, whether you trust those numbers probably depends on whether you trust D.C. with school data. And the recent experience shows that, well, D.C. isn't so good with being honest about school data.

You can also check with the D.C. Attorney General, who prosecutes residency fraud cases. This year, the AG is prosecuting two residency fraud cases. Last school year, it was 12.

All of this is to say is that non-D.C. residents do attend D.C. schools. But given the data that's out there now, it's not a huge amount. (And again: all of this hinges on people believing the data, which understandably is hard these days.)

I’m sure it does. I have a friend who kept their condo even after they bought a home in another neighborhood just to have access to a certain neighborhood school and feeder. It was all within D.C., but it’s still a means to game the system.

          That's residency fraud too, right?
