Although I appreciate those who engage in public service, I prefer a world where a private sector job is more coveted than a government job.https://twitter.com/maggieNYT/status/962099816070307841 …

Once upon a time, number 3 at DoJ would have been so coveted for a careerist that you wouldn’t leave after nine months https://twitter.com/elianayjohnson/status/962098062645694464 …

I understand and appreciate that. I'd rather not have government service be considered a career pinnacle—and I don't think it is, except to those who disdain the private sector.

Hmm. I think there are a lot of people who don't distain the private sector but who would nonetheless think those positions represent career pinnacles. But I don't, you know, have survey data or anything to back that up. 😉

There are a lot of people who seem incapable of comprehending that someone would want to leave a high-profile government job for the private sector. See, e.g. the Haberman tweet.

Yes: I said I suspect it means that. But right now I'm having trouble following all the indefinite pronoun references throughout this thread, so I'm honestly getting lost.

Don’t think the NYT tweet suggested anything of the sort fwiw. I’m off to bed

Really? You don't think this is saying that a rational person wouldn't leave a DoJ job like this for the private sector? Doesn't "so coveted" suggest that?pic.twitter.com/3dlvYbuCkz

I disagree with that, as well. I know many people who leave the private sector to serve in a government job out of a sense of patriotic duty. They would rather not, but feel it's something they owe back to the country.
