This could also give the court some nice political cover if it does do something on this issue as the Maryland case is a GOP challenge and the Wisconsin case is a Democratic challenge

As part of this redistricting scheme, my neighborhood in Silver Spring was moved from the 4th district to the 8th to add additional majority Dem voters to a district that was losing Dem voters to the gerrymandered new district (6th). The plan worked...

Particularly if you buy (which I do to a certain degree) that Roberts’ paramount concern is the Court’s legitimacy as a neutral arbiter, calling balls and strikes and whatnot

One possible theory is there’s enough votes to invalidate Wisconsin’s scheme and the Court added this case so that it can strike down jerrymanders in states controlled by each party.
