This is very good.https://twitter.com/evefairbanks/status/933383092454281216 …
This piece does not mention Mike Allen. This did not happen in a vacuum. And I think it misrepresents the DC press corps by ignoring all the reporters who don't do this type of reporting
-
-
Well, it does mention Politico in general. I didn’t take it as a sweeping vilification of political journalism, just a certain approach.
-
For instance, there are plenty of reporters at Politico I think do great work!
-
I agree -- but the point is that in journalism is there's more than one way to skin a cat
-
Lawrence, do you think the vision of DC Halperin advanced was an accurate one?
-
B/c I rhink you are taking the critique as one of style, not substance, whereas I saw it as the opposite.
-
Ughh thats “think.” Cursed thumbs.

American news consumers are like all American consumers. They're insatiable, distractible, and hungry for familiar arcs disguised as transgressive, exotic insight. Halperin sold them something they wanted to buy. It was junk food. But he didn't create the appetite.
-
Do you think feeding that appetite was okay, then?
-
I think it's weird to suggest that someone eager to make a name for themselves in journalism should refrain from creating poor-quality journalism that people want to consume. There will is a spectrum of journalism. Some is lurid, sterile, revelatory, occluding, great, crap.
-
By “poor-quality,” do you mean innaccurate, or just sensational?
-
B/c what I aporeciated about the piece was that it pushed back against the construction of a certain narrative that I’ve never bought
