That's true, although D.C. is an outlier in this regard. https://www.census.gov/dataviz/visualizations/026/508.php … And as a result, it's near-in suburbs are quite urban.

Hmm, it's less an outlier than I'd guessed. Half of U.S. cities are giant, half are tiny but their suburbs are effectively urban.

DC is....pretty small. In most bigger cities 3-10 miles from downtown is square in a residential neighborhood of that city.
