Alito says that "legal and economic backdrop" has changed since the 1977 Abood ruling, noting that rise of unions led to increases in public spending, and subsequently to problems funding benefits packages (and municipal bankruptcies). Says Abood is an "anomaly."

Presidential tweet doesn't quite nail what the case was about. Non-member workers already could support candidates of their choosing and unions had to separate out political spending from collective bargaining spending. Now non-members don't have to pay unions anythingpic.twitter.com/bUR8arQf4U
