The candidate mission will have L-band radiometry, and will measure sea surface salinity, with a focus on cold polar/Arctic waters. But indeed there is a risk of a gap for L-band radiometry before is operational. 👉 👉

We also look at how some products over- and under-estimate 100% concentration conditions. And we use plenty of ship-based observations! About 7,000 from and ~8,000 from .

We looked at the “minimum detected ” (plot) for all 10 products. We find some products have jumps when changing satellite. Some filters interfere with the 15% limit, that is used in extent. Take home message: users and producers, take a look at your filters!

... data producers use weather filters to remove gross errors over ocean. But at the same time, the filters cut away some true ice (e.g. the band of red values along the ice edge, Weddell Sea).

… we find that the 10 products differ quite dramatically in terms of extent and area (but agree on the trends). Several factors explain the differences (algorithm used, resolution, and 𝙬𝙚𝙖𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝙛𝙞𝙡𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙨).

december 2019 extent is 5th lowest in the data record, on par with 2018. Record low december is still 2016. And happy new year 2020 from me :)

*Antarctic*: The cover was melting rapidly in November (as normal). November 2019 is fourth lowest, on par with last year. The record high November was as recently as 2013. (EUMETSAT data with R&D input from ESA )

After a steady refreeze, for November is *2nd lowest* in the time series (very close to 2012). Year 2019 continues the long-term trend of decline. Year 2016 holds -by far- the biggest anomaly for this month.
