Our OS class has around 300-350 students per year - since 2015 we offer the class twice per year. You get a tiny OS stub and have to complete it, sometimes students go crazy and write networks, graphics, sound drivers, or port games, Doom 3D, N64 emulators, anything.

It's really hard work (people hate it for that) but you really feel the reward in how much you learn (people love it for that). Debugging race conditions in your own messy multi-threaded kernel code can be quite intense, so we offer question hours, or rather: a question week.

Sometimes people stay late / over night at the question hours to finally find that one nasty bug. Sometimes it's 70+ people at the question hours. The question week ends with the deadline (Friday 6pm). In 2013 we spontaneously went for Pizza right after the deadline.

Also right after the deadline, the final tests are run. There's a public high score list (https://sweb.student.iaik.tugraz.at/ ) that we all watched on a Laptop. We repeated this in 2014. Since 2015 we're twice per year in a pub for the final event.

You will find student teams cheering for their test scores more than for soccer games. Since 2017 we added a operating systems / computer science pub quiz (see https://gruss.cc/pq/ ) and awards for the best names (there are some really creative ones in the high score list).

So this was the 7th pub quiz we organized and the 13th final event. The feedback from the students is really positive and it took me quite some time to understand why it is so important to the students: It's about showing appreciation and celebrating what they achieved.
