We call for solidarity with the 400,000 MDWs in Hong Kong, a crucial yet marginalized part of our population who ought to be treated with respect and humanity.

Ultimately, the obligation to provide the necessary precautions against the coronavirus falls on the state, and we reiterate calls for the HK government to immediately provide free masks for everyone.

Employers should provide masks for MDWs and ensure they have enough rest and nutritious food so they do not fall ill easily. Sensible responses to the virus outbreak should not come at a detriment to MDWs' rights.

Rest days are not just for MDWs to take a break from work and socialise. They also allow MDWs to seek help from their organisations for workplace issues and abuse they may be facing, and exchange news about Hong Kong.

It violates the statutory right of MDWs to enjoy one rest day per week, and could lead to further exploitation of those who are already overworked.

This treatment discriminates against MDWs, who are required to stay in while the rest of the household can freely go out. It also presumes that MDWs are somehow incapable of a hygienic lifestyle.

HK Labour Department has urged migrant domestic workers (MDWs) to stay at their employers' residence on their rest days; some employers have heeded the call and banned MDWs from going out. We condemn this unjust and dehumanizing treatment of MDWs.

Rest in power Dr. Li. Whistleblowers on matters of critical public interest, such as imminent risk to public health and safety, must be given protection both in the law and internally by the government. The CCP has gone in the exact opposite direction.

Amid conflicting reports about his health, Weibo users honor Dr Li Wenliang as an early coronavirus whistleblower. His censure and detention remind us that a free flow of information is crucial to public health and that the ultimate cost of government mismanagement is human life.

health workers who are working themselves to the breaking point to help those affected and to contain the illness at great personal risk. This is a time for solidarity and sympathy for fellow humans, not a time to dehumanize people with racist yellow peril tropes.
