Except how is the hydrogen made? Natural Gas?

Electricity. Nordics have heaps of cheap hydro and wind.

It isn’t what is technologically feasible. That isn’t the issue. At what cost. If it is more expensive, (which it is) we, as a society need to give up something else (a hospital or two) to use this steel instead.
-
1) These guys don't do this out of good heart, and that's what makes this significant. 2) For the society as a whole, this is FAR less costly than the alternative (coal-based steelmaking), given air pollution and climate impacts.

Do you know if the hydrogen is made from renewables or is carbon capture involved?
-
They'll use electricity to produce the hydrogen and say "for that to make, sense, the electricity we use must be CO2-free". One reason to do the first pilots in the Nordics was the low-carbon power supply.

What about the economics? Even with cheap electricity, this should be substantially more expensive than classic coal-based steel. Is there any contract for difference in play, or another form of subsidy? Who is going to buy this CO2-free steel?
-
There could be a business case in high purity steels but for large volumes I imagine it will rely on maintaining a carbon price, on the EU border if needed (looking at you US, China and others)

Thermal coal already in decline, and now the beginning of the end for metallurgical coal. Australia left floundering in the economic wake of the transition away from fossil fuels. Thanks to
#LNPClimateCriminals Superior economic management my arse. -
Forward thinking countries who not only respect climate science, but actually invest heavily in lowering emissions, will leave Australia in the dust. Literally. They'll flourish with jobs in the future, where Australians will keep selling souls for a mere 50K coal jobs!
