A yellow (pro-democracy) restaurant on Hong Kong Island took down its posters when the national security law passed, replacing them w/ blank pieces of paper & Post-its. The movement’s branding is so strong that it doesn’t even need text or illustrations to communicate a message.

A health dept official officially signed & stamped my quarantine declaration in duplicate. He was nice & friendly, explaining that I could go yumcha on the morning of the 28th. He asked if I had someone to take care of me & if I had a thermometer. When I hesitated, he gave me one

At CDG, the check-in staff wore masks and gloves. Masks are mandatory inside the airport. But on the plane to London, and on my next flight to HK, no BA staff wore masks, surprisingly.

I just went through this, but there were so many steps & stations upon arrival in HK that I’ve forgotten half. I filled in a quarantine order + a health declaration, was made to download an app, received a tracking bracelet, had it registered. Someone checked my phone # worked.

Here’s a time lapse of me awkwardly doing my self-test in my booth: I made a “kruuuar” sound as instructed to hock up my deep-throat saliva & spit it into a tube (w/ the help of a paper funnel) and double-bagged it. Several ppl made sure the tube was upright when I handed it in.

After receiving my bracelet and my thermometer, I went on through immigration and got my bags as normal. On the other side we were directed onto buses and young men in full protection gear helped load our bags onto the bus.

He showed me how to fill in my symptom + temperature tracking table, explained that I needed to fill in another form with the details of my method of transportation home (eg license plate #). Everything was in a manila folder. He told me not to worry & wished me good health.

Just about everyone I’ve ever interviewed or photographed while covering the 2014 protests — at the start of my career — and the 2019 protests has been arrested, is in jail, or in exile. The entire cast of characters of the story of democracy in Hong Kong gone in one fell swoop.

The captain on my LHR > HKG flight said there were about 100 of us on the plane. That means the Boeing 777 was at 1/3 of its capacity. Every single passenger (except someone who apparently had special permission to connect to Brunei) will enter some sort of quarantine.

We were given bright orange lanyards to be marked as people to be tested. The testing and waiting take place in different giant halls at Asia World Expo. A tag # (associated with our test) would eventually be clipped to our lanyard.

After dropping off our bags in one place and getting luggage tags; we got back on the bus as were dropped off at another facility. There we stood in line to get our testing packs. A health worker gave us our tag number, our packs, and explained how to conduct the self-test.

About an hour ago, roughly 25 injured ppl were taken away by ambulances. Some were visibly injured or unwell. There were however about a dozen young ppl who did not seem visibly hurt & who were led away like prisoners: single file, hands on the shoulders of the person in front.
Disband the police. Hong Kong independence. One nation, one Hong Kong. Fight until the end. Chants are deafening at this mall protest marking the 1-yr anniversary of police using teargas on anti-extradition protesters. It’s estimated that they’ve since fired 16,000 canisters.

That was one of the craziest things I’ve ever seen. At PolyU now. This is after an armored vehicle made a charge for the protesters on the bridge only to get engulfed in flames after petrol bombs were thrown. It reversed, while on fire, as police fired teargas. #HongKongProtest

People often talk about the protesters like they’re radical rioters out to cause trouble for the hell of it. I’ve seen adult women & men in suits break and stack bricks or form human chains to pass supplies to frontline protesters. This is a result of the failure of the HK govt.

Police just fired pepper balls and a possibly a rubber bullet into a group of journalists. That was the first time I had to turn and flee from the police because they were aiming and firing directly at us.
At Southorn Playground in Wan Chai, people are Singing Hallelujah to the Lord. Someone just showed up dressed up as Moses. This is a “religious” event — protesters think that religious rallies are exempt from police authorization (though unclear if that’s actually true).

Carrie Lam has made it abundantly clear that she does not give a shit about regular Hong Kong people and that she cares a lot more about keeping powerful people happy. She alone makes the case for the importance of people being able to elect their own leader.

Met with just now in London. He is relieved to be safe and free in London, though his family is still adjusting — especially to the cold. He is determined to be “a voice for Hong Kong” and says he will work hard to lobby politicians here and elsewhere.

There is a atmosphere of patient cooperation. We are all HK residents returning home, who got on our planes knowing (vaguely) what was ahead of us upon arrival, including the mandatory 2-week quarantine. After 2.5 months in Europe (mostly in France), it’s a relief to be back.
Quite the turnout for the rally for Uighurs/Tibet/Hong Kong outside the Chinese Embassy in London for the 100th anniversary of the CCP and the 24th anniversary of the HK Handover. It’s a sharp contrast from the somber day that Hong Kong had.
I’m home 😭 but seriously why is everyone rushing to get off this plane literally every single one of us is going into a 3-week hotel quarantine

For those who are calling my experience the “future of travel”, keep in mind this is Hong Kong trying to find a solution to allow residents to come home without endangering the entire city. I don’t see how this could become scaleable before a vaccine is developed and distributed.

There are STILL only ~130 cases in Hong Kong. There are now 798 cases in the UK & ppl are still out & about as if nothing is wrong. When I was in Milan (at a time when there were 3,000 cases), I was shocked at the lack of concern, including from police & health workers. 2/
