My six-year-old brought home this ridiculous "consent" form yesterday. What am I supposed to do with this? Just glanced over policies of three providers on the list (of 58) and already found one that says it's "designed to be used by individuals who are over the age of thirteen."pic.twitter.com/fbsEZRNe3g

Maybe it's time to have the conversation about tape on the cameras and how real names are magic (so don't give yours to a machine)

Maybe it's MCPS' way of saying your kid is already reading at an 8th grade level? 🤷‍♂️

At least they informed you and asked your consent? Youngest child now a junior and I don’t think I ever saw such a list or form. Even though I know they used many of these and others. Small comfort, I realize.

I tried to fight this twice. One was trivial: had to grant Apple my daughter's image rights to go on a field trip to an Apple Store. Didn't. Was the only parent. She sat alone with the VP, I think. (Nevermind why the Apple Store is a valid field trip.)

The other was around use of Google's education suite. They just had her sit at the back and use Scratch. Had no idea how to answer my questions. I finally relented as the social cost on my daughter was too high.

I see lots of tech privacy folks (correctly) pointing out how this is problematic privacy-wise, but I also note that "alternatives" when consent is not given is very possibly inequitable, and harder for the teacher.

This is what makes this so hard. Some suggest the simple answer is just to check "no." But it's not so simple. Declining has real costs—creates challenges for teachers, may divide class into digital and analog sections that are not equitable, and could hurt kids/parents socially.

Interesting claim that the tools have been evaluated. How and by whom? Most school admins charged with responsibility for tools/sites (and privacy more broadly) don't have the skills/training to know what they should look for.
