Gamergate, pick up artists, men's rights, Ghostbusters, harassment of women, WOC, and POC online, men yelling FHRITP during journalist's live hits. I CAN'T BELIEVE ANYONE IS SURPRISED RIGHT NOW

I'm not the first person to say this today, I'm probably not even the thousandth person to say it, but WE'VE BEEN FUCKING TELLING YOU THAT WE'RE EXPERIENCING REAL VIOLENCE ONLINE AND PEOPLE ACTED LIKE WE WERE EXAGGERATING

"It's just online, don't feed the trolls, turn off your computer and go outside for awhile." FUCK YOU.

The kind of abusive behaviour we all see from people online every day isn't okay, and it hasn't been okay, and its implications aren't limited to "online"

Which also, while "online" isn't tangible, it is a space we live in and what happens here is real.

Like, I'm online yelling but I barely even feel it anymore. We see the dehumanization of women everywhere, and it takes a high-casualty media extravaganza for anyone to pay attention.

The MMIWG Inquiry is ongoing; Liberals had to have their arms twisted by the Senate to restore status rights to all Indigenous women; and how many women have been killed by their partners (or ex partners) so far this year?

The Ghomeshi trial; the women assaulted in taxis and insulted by Judge Lenehan in Halifax; NS Liberals tossing Michelle Coffin aside to embrace her abuser...

As a post script, please remember, given the chaotic nature of mass casualty events (and the response to them) there's still a chance that incel post isn't actually from the killer. If that turns out to be the case, everything else in this thread is still true.

Censorship is not the right answer. Proper Mental Health care is. I know that sounds like a BS statement but it’s true. I’ve been where the van driver is, and it can become a real psychosis. It all comes down to where you find “help” and this guy found it in the wrong place.
-
Unfortunately, mental health care isn't going to fix this. The problem, unfortunately, is huge. Masculinity, as currently constructed, is toxic and we need to work as a society to make things better. In the meantime, we can't allow these hateful communities to thrive online.
-
I'm going to retweet some of the links I shared yesterday about men's rights and some of the branches of those beliefs, I hope you'll check them out. It's not about jailing people who express these views, but it is about shining light on them, and holding platforms accountable.
-
I have major depressive disorder (as well as attention deficit disorder) and I've also been extremely low and online for periods of my life, I have a lot of empathy for people experiencing that.
-
We need to expand treatment options for mental health care to provide a variety of services in emergency and non-emergency situations. We also need to find ways to help people build community so they don't feel alone.
-
We need to do all of that, and we also can't ignore when people have turned to dehumanizing others as a coping mechanism. Because that doesn't just effect them, it spills into the world and is experienced by others as violence.

At this Hugo Awards I sat down with a friend and was told the men were there to have a good time. Guess we messed up their vibe while they slate-voted.https://www.theguardian.com/books/booksblog/2016/aug/20/hugo-awards-reading-the-sad-puppies-pets …
-
They should have tried having a good time about work that was actually good. That sad puppy slate was some of the worst shit I've ever seen
