New from @ameliatd and me: Half of Americans -- including a quarter of Democrats -- think impeachment is a bad use of time. Among those, 39% say it distracts Congress from more important issues. https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/half-of-americans-think-impeachment-is-a-bad-use-of-congresss-time/ …pic.twitter.com/mRL1lad6xK

In fact, in an open-ended question, *24%* of Republicans mentioned the word "waste" -- up from around 17% in previous weeks. Democrats, on the other hand, haven't coalesced similarly around a single narrative -- their top words aren't used as much.pic.twitter.com/75rZh1IKRa

Also notable: Democrats' top words are not about the substance ("Ukraine", "quid pro quo"), but rather the length of the process (“long”, “slow”), the figure at the center of the drama (“Trump”, “president”), and the reasons for its existence (“necessary”, “justice”).pic.twitter.com/tv0rkbv3Dt

As the top words indicate, Republicans are much more cohesive than Democrats in terms of the number of top words they use in their response. In the most recent wave, 17% used *3 or more* of the top ten words, and more than half used at least one.pic.twitter.com/mg3FhMu51v

To double check that it isn't just about the top 10 words, we also calculated the entropy of the word distribution -- that is, how far each party is from a uniform distribution of words. Republicans' words are more clustered than Democrats', and are getting more so.pic.twitter.com/sKTF8onSdH

In all, this suggests that at least one of the Republican narratives on impeachment -- that it's a "waste of time" -- is landing quite successfully with their voters, while Democrats don't seem to have a similar unifying strand.
