Someone DMd me and asked to hear stories from people who left academia and had a meaningful career either in economics, data science, journalism or any field really. Would love to hear people’s experiences with that.
I finished a political science PhD in 2018 and am now the quantitative editor at FiveThirtyEight. So I still get to nitpick methods & complain about standard errors! Absolutely no regrets about leaving academia.

I should add: I think a lot of places outside academia need people with social science skills (stats, causal inference), though some places might not entirely know they need them. And: I’m happy to answer questions.

The last few years I think we've seen a disconnect where need for social science has been increasing while market demand in many areas had been falling. Not sure how to fix it--anyone out there want to hire some social scientists to go around explaining what we can do?
