Also, the cost of being unable to respond to methods questions without saying "Well, it depends -- all options here have pros and cons." Maybe that's just me, though

Yeah, I was confused to learn that people outside academia actually want answers to their methodological questions rather than an exhaustive run-down of options and their relative advantages and disadvantages in different contexts!? I'm still working on it.
