Yeah, I was confused to learn that people outside academia actually want answers to their methodological questions rather than an exhaustive run-down of options and their relative advantages and disadvantages in different contexts!? I'm still working on it.

It's not just you and it's not just PhD, it's like that for all academics. Even further i also noticed it on some people without any academic background which are just structured thinkers. Comparing options like that is a sign of critical thinking in general, i guess.
