Here's a piece from @ortoiseortoise that I agree with and disagree with, but not in the same sense at the same time! Like all good millennials I shall resolve this apparent contradiction through a series of tweets and clear up all confusion. https://www.chronicle.com/article/Don-t-Be-Fooled-There-Is-a/243206/?key=vSQp-3cf-De7HoC41GBsvjqj4UkhivZm9f7-Mj4GzHhFO9uShkl2QoQ32SgIlFfERnloTlVsUHBmZm54TE51Z094TkRPQURmVmR3SDlYcUZhN2h2WXU2U2M2MA#.Wt8sAocfEdM.twitter …

Two agreements: first, indeed it does not suffice to show that there is no real problems for free speech to show that it is popular, this is a basically bad argument that has picked up too much steam. Second, I'm generally wary of the incentives university administrators face.

My disagreements: I think lots of current free speech problems come from people classifying dissenting speech as outside bounds of protected speech (I think this is part of what Stanley and Manne were getting at), and "free speech crisis" rhetoric often exacerbates this problem.

I’ve seen times when folk treat as chilling what amounts to the kinda behaviour one should expect in a society with free speech and hotly contentious issues open to discussion. If they treat it as a threat to rather than instance of free speech they end up opposed to that state.

I'm not sure it's wrong to call anti-free-speech speech a threat to free speech, if it calls for administration to no-platform things or what have you.

Aye. I didn’t mean that there are no people who are in fact opposed to free speech. There are plenty.

Setting aside policy, one challenge is sustaining a culture of free speech (CFS). If there are serious informal sanctions for even moderately dissenting opinions, I worry that undermines CFS. But this can quickly turn into bad "don't criticize others" norms, also undermining CFS.
