Among my more nationalist-y opinions: it sucks that St. George's Day is not a bank holiday in England.
Most basic reason: I should like more bank holidays, and this is a culturally salient excuse for one. Slightly more principled reason: it is good to make clear (and inculcate in people) that there are things more valuable than increased productivity for capitalists.

Now that so many places stay open on bank holidays I fear they reinforce the (false) idea that people in minimum wages jobs deserve less free time. & my exposure to the cultural stuff around St George has been overwhelmingly negative, leading me to hope there are better excuses
