Ah I am not sure - since smaller communities also presumably produce less, so there is less one needs to wade through to see all the available work. How it balances out is not obvious to me.

If the issue was merely lots of healthy subfields that are really small and specialised then there would be lots of papers with a small number of citations... lots of uncited papers indicates something more problematic, as I see it

Or, perhaps even scarier is that there's lots of chaff in these subfields and not much wheat. It'd be interesting if there was a way to see if there's a sizable gap in citation numbers between those that are cited and those that are not (all or nothing, essentially).
