I take Du Boisian double consciousness to be the felt experience of knowing oneself to fall under two (or more) sets of norms, each of which one endorses to at least some extent and so cannot fully repudiate, but which are deontically inconsistent.

If I am right about Du Bois’ #philosophy of science then 1) he think there are different and clashing norms appropriate for scientific legislators versus normal scientists, and 2) that he is both of those things. So his own experience in science is a kind of double consciousness.
