Two things that annoy me when philosophers do them. (1) Pretend to refute a position by coming up with some technical objection to the particular way a thing has been phrased, rather than seriously engaging with the spirit of the underlying idea...

(2) Insist that because it's the spirit of the thing that matters they don't need to get their hands messy engaging with mere technical details, because it can be worked out later....

These are equal and opposite ways of refusing to advance The Dialectic, and so every time one of these excuses is offered for bad practice it makes baby Hegel up in (Platonic) heaven cry. But there are downsides too, so on net I don't think you should do it. #philosophy
