In art it's simply compulsory now and most aspriring "serious" writers I know are in a program. In my view network effects are much stronger in these worlds than in say maths or even regular humanities so it's vital to get into a good program (ಥ﹏ಥ)
I see, so maybe it’s just that, compared to other art degrees, creative writing MFAs have much stronger pressure to attend and get one even absent intrinsic motivation?

Definitely, my concerns are really 1 do the cost/entry requirements serve to unfairly restrict access and 2 has the process (despite the positives you raise) homogenised literature or art production
