At #philosophy talk on value free ideal, was said: “one could be a full on logical positivist like Bertrand Russell and still protest the bomb”. BR not a positivist, Neurath has 1st use of inductive risk argument, and Hempel wrote early critiques of the value free ideal!!

Which Hempel? I should know this clearly...
It’s an essay in Aspects of Scientific Explanation, I believe it’s called Science and Human Values. He goes through a few ways science might relate to normative claims and ends up endorsing inductive risk; it’s after Rudner, but I actually find Hempel’s discussion clearer.
