So goes a standard narrative. 1) whats a source for this that I could reference? 2) Does anybody have a sense of whether there is something we are supposed to have learned, and if so what, that is in tension with what one would think if one did disguised philosophy of physics?

Pretty sure David Hull says something along those lines. Also Dupre. As for what we leant? Genuine inter-theoretic reduction is incredibly rare. Disunity of science kind of theses. Also that even philosophy of physics may be too general.
