Reading about spread of Confucianism in early modern Japan, amused by translators’ habit of discussing idea that ruler has Mandate of Heaven but literally not mentioning the further fact that if one lacks benevolence and humane rule then one loses mandate and may be replaced.

if the historical long run here is usually longer than a human lifespan is it really still "playing with fire"?

If one wants nothing more than one's own personal wealth and power (and some do) then you can outlast it. But if one has ambitions to found a dynasty or maintain an empire then aye. The long run might happen when we're all dead, but for some future persons it's their short run.
