Bizarre thing about moving to America to be in academia is all the fancy right-on lefty academicals are super comfortable making sarcastic comments about `sportsball' in ways which seem to me, humble Britisher that I am, like just naked snobbery. What's up with this?

I don't think this is a distinctively American thing. I've had UK academics be snooty about sport at or near me.
Interesting, any sense of the political affiliations of the room at that time? One of the reasons this shocks me is that it’s happening from folk who are generally lefties.
