Bizarre thing about moving to America to be in academia is all the fancy right-on lefty academicals are super comfortable making sarcastic comments about `sportsball' in ways which seem to me, humble Britisher that I am, like just naked snobbery. What's up with this?

Do they make such comments about american football, or about 'soccer'? (And does that sport have the same working class connotations in the States?)
(Films I have in mind - Boyz in the Hood, Friday Night Lights, Remember the Titans; I guess in the latter it seemed more mixed class, but black kids at least seemed largely working class. But yeah you know you’re foreign when your picture of American culture is from Disney!)

I've said "sportsball" to make fun of my lack of knowledge of it, not people who like it. Will be more mindful, thanks! More generally, the class snobbery inacademia is unbelievable. One instance: they assume all non-academic jobs are unfulfilling.
