Trying to find references--may have been Peirce speaking of walking through a swamp covered in fog, not knowing where one goes, trying the ground; Popper employs a similar metaphor of hiking up a mountain range covered in mist, not knowing where is the highest peak.
Ah if you do find references, please do send them to me! I'd be very interested to see a collection of such visual metaphors for the activity of doing philosophy.

I had a collection some years ago. I'll try to find it, but it may have not survived. Will update you as soon as I find the Peirce and Popper metaphors.
