There's a lot to read into it about the theoretical systems philosophers construct--reminds me of the metaphors Peirce and Popper employed--Peirce speaking of constructing on a swamp and Popper speaking of theories being pylons driven down into the sand.

Trying to find references--may have been Peirce speaking of walking through a swamp covered in fog, not knowing where one goes, trying the ground; Popper employs a similar metaphor of hiking up a mountain range covered in mist, not knowing where is the highest peak.
