Actually the second syllogism isn't valid: the major premise isn't universally quantified, it's a generic. Generics admit of exceptions.
One could use it to mean "if kind then socialist", it is (and things like it are) ambiguous between condensed conditional and true generic.

In a "logic textbook"! And if I saw it in the context of a syllogism I think that disambiguates to the conditional reading!
