I've got an opportunity to teach an intro seminar on a 'classic text' but hate valorisation of the canon. Any text suggestions? #noheroes

Grumbled for a bit about whether philosophy teaching wd be worse w/o heroes. Cant stop thinking about heroes now. So, Aristotle's Poetics.

If heroes weren't overwhelmingly white and male it might be fine. (@lastpositivist might disagree?) But that's not the world we live in.

I do disagree! Problem is with the role heroes play in academic culture not the particular heroes we have: office, not holder. #NoHeroes

Ah hard to say on twitter but briefly: leads to unnecessary & harmful homogenisation of our knowledge base and thought styles in philosophy.

I can see ppl might say that about a canon (Id maybe still disagree), but if we're talking UG tutes, I dont see those results as inevitable

Probably hangs on what we mean by hero though.
