... along the way you’d learn about maths in its cultural context and relationship to both applied trade and science, you can raise so as to understand but also question the pure/applied distinction, you could learn what a proof is which was really lacking in my education...

... this is why I can’t hate that Seattle cultural history of maths proposal. I think this would make a great sixth from course (so late high school) and I think it’d be a way of fulfilling many of the requirements it set out. You gotta think of the possibilities!

Aye but I’d be keen to trace Hellenic influences to give context for Ptolemy’s philosophical or broader mathematical thought, which I think would be a good note to end on - I’ve been reading this book: Ptolemy's Philosophy: Mathematics as a Way of Life

After taking 3rd Year Math (mostly Trigonometry) 3 times before passing it, I never had the slightest idea what the hell it was all about until I read a few pages in Alfred North Whitehead. In my life, Math has been horribly taught by those who adore numbers to those who don’t.
